About GFEDV

The Global Foundation for the Elimination of Domestic Violence is a non-profit organisation with the aim to eliminate domestic violence on a global scale.

Why GFEDV is important

Globally:

At least one in three women is beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused by an intimate partner in the course of her lifetime. Women aged 15-44 are more at risk from rape and domestic violence than from cancer, motor accidents, war and malaria, according to World Bank data. Several global surveys suggest that half of all women who die from homicide are killed by their current or former husbands or partners. Interpersonal violence is the leading cause of death in adolescents and young people worldwide. There is growing evidence that abuse has severe consequences for victims and their children's long-term health. Efforts to escape violence can have devastating economic impacts resulting in social exclusion, worklessness and family poverty. Leaving a relationship might mean a survivor could lose their job, housing, health care, child care, or access to their partner’s income. According to the Center for Disease Control, health-related costs of intimate partner violence exceed $5.8 billion each year in the US.

In the UK:

The cost of domestic violence in the UK is estimated at £23 billion. 750,000 children in the UK are affected by domestic violence. In the UK domestic violence currently affects 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men in their lifetimes.

Our objectives

• To work with other partners to become a leading resource in sharing knowledge to eliminate domestic violence.
• To provide practical expertise, tools and guidance to support the elimination of domestic violence.
• To commission and collate research into the impact, cost and savings related to domestic violence.
• To evaluate the effectiveness of different policy solutions to domestic violence.
• To work in partnership with interested parties and key stakeholders to provide bespoke solutions to domestic violence.
• To work with governments to help meet UN and other appropriate standards on addressing domestic violence.
